The First of the Studio Ghibli Movies was by far way ahead of its league back in 1984. The creative mandate for all Ghibli movies probably was set by this movie. Serious yet soft, fantasy yet real, that's what made this movie so great.
If you haven't yet seen it, you better. Avatar the movie for sure has been inspired by Ghibli films, so if you like Avatar, you will probably love all of Ghibli.
